The Happiness Project

Whenever I’m at the airport, I have to buy a book. I’m not sure when this started but it has become a definite “thing”. So, on my way to The Keys, I picked up a booked titled “The Happiness Project” by Gretchen Rubin. It’s a journal-ish story of the authors decision to commit a year to happiness. Not in the Eat, Pray, Love: “I have a million dollars and I moved to India” kind of way. But more in the “I’m happy, I have a good life, I could appreciate it more” kind of way. The thing that struck me, was that she realized she didn’t want to wait for something to happen that made her look back and say “Man, I had it good.” She wanted to feel that way now. And since changing your thoughts is harder than changing your actions, she started with her actions.

Considering that “happiness” was too broad of a commitment, she decided to do research on “happiness” and split the year into months, and the months into subsections of her personal happiness. Boost Energy, Remember Love, Aim Higher, Make Time For Friends. And then from there, she picked resolutions that went with each month. Getting more sleep, quit nagging, don’t expect praise or appreciation. She speaks frankly amount the struggles and triumphs of the idea, keeps a calendar to mark her personal efforts at this resolutions, and tracks her happiness. The book became such a hit that she started a website, a blog, and a Happiness Toolbox site, where you, or even a group of people, can track their own Happiness Project. Each persons “project” is completely unique. Whether it’s getting enough sunshine, making time to read a book, date nights, quit nagging, saying a positive affirmation each day, drinking more water, or doing random daily acts of kindness. Whatever your M.O., go for it! It’s about finding what makes you happy, or the people around you happy, and doing more of that.

I’m only half way through the book, and I have started my own Happiness Project on her website, but I couldn’t wait to share this one. I definitely suggest picking up a copy. She also has another book coming out titled “Happier at Home”, AND there’s been rumors for a few years of an NBC TV show, starring Kristin Davis!! That would be amazing.
